Here are a few advantages of aluminum roofing shingles:

Two Common Styles of Aluminum Roofing

Standing-Seam and Batten Roofing

With panel-style metal roofing, there are two familiar patterns that are created when the panels are joined together. The panels are installed vertically on a roof generally every six, nine, or 12 inches, but are sold in a variety of sizes to fit the look and style of your home. At the edge of each panel is a raised rib that interlocks with the next panel, providing a tight seal that keeps out water and does a great job at shedding water off the roof. The difference between a standing-seam and batten roofing is the width of the raised rib.

  • Standing-Seam: The raised ribs of a standing seam roof are either ¾ inch to 1½ inch or ½ inch to ¾ inch wide.
  • Batten Roofing: The ribs are about 2½ inches wide.
Although this style is common for commercial roofs, many homeowners enjoy the clean, contemporary look.

Homeowners May Be Hesitant About Metal Roofs

Misconceptions About Metal Roofs

There are several types of metal roofs, including steel, copper, and aluminum, but because metal roofs are not the standard for roofing companies, homeowners are often hesitant about using metal for their roof replacement.

  • Metal Roofs Are Noisy: Today’s installation techniques and additional padding greatly reduce noise that can occur from rain or debris falling on the roof.
  • They’re Expensive: Although there may be a greater upfront cost, metal roofs last much longer than traditional asphalt shingles, making them a cost-effective alternative.
  • They Rust: Most metal roofing materials are rust-resistant or are designed with a finish that resists rust.
  • Metal Roofs Are Hot: Even though the metal itself may be hot to the touch, light is reflected off metal, which actually helps it remain cooler.
  • Metal Attracts Lightning: There is no greater risk of your home getting struck by lightning with a metal roof than with an asphalt roof.
