Types and Advantages of Asphalt Roofing
Modern technology has greatly improved the quality of asphalt shingles, making them the most common type of roofing material with a variety of benefits. There are three main types of shingles, including 3-tab shingles, dimensional shingles, and luxury shingles.
3-TAB
Also known as strip shingles, this type appears to be three pieces of shingle, but it is actually one single piece. They are made of a single layer of asphalt with a flat appearance.
DIMENSIONAL
Also known as architectural or laminate shingles, these are made with two or more layers of asphalt that are fused together, giving the roof a dimensional appearance. They are heavier than 3-tab and offer greater protection.
LUXURY
High-quality laminate shingles, these are heavier than dimensional shingles and offer the most protection from weather and dimensionality. They are made to look like wood shake or slate roofing.

How Asphalt Shingles Are Made
It may not seem necessary to understand how asphalt shingles are made, but if you’re in need of an affordable roof replacement, then the more you know about the material, the better.
A majority of today’s asphalt shingles are made using fiberglass, unlike shingles made before the 1980s which used an organic-based mat that consists of cellulose, recycled paper, and asphalt coated ceramic granules. Although organic-based asphalt shingles are available, fiberglass shingles are more lightweight, easier to install, have a better fire rating, and use less asphalt.
Fiberglass shingles are made with a woven fiberglass base mat that is covered with a waterproof asphalt coating. This is then topped with ceramic granules to protect the shingles from UV rays. Because a fiberglass mat is used rather than an asphalt-based mat, fiberglass shingles require less asphalt, making them a more environmentally-friendly option. This type of shingle is also very resilient, non-porous, won’t dry or, or change shape.
