Learn The Truth About Metal Roofing

While there may be some truth to this, there are two things that must be factored into the decision. First, just like asphalt shingles, there is a range of prices depending on the actual material and how it’s manufactured – there are reasonable prices or you could spend tens of thousands of dollars on a reroofing. Second, a metal roof can last significantly longer than an asphalt roof. So even though there may be a greater initial investment, in the long run, when you factor in energy efficiency and an increased resale value, a metal roof can be a more cost-effective option.

This may have been true decades ago when there wasn’t a way to properly install metal roofs to prevent noise that would occur from rain, snow, or falling debris. With today’s technology, there can be additional padding installed between the metal and the roof’s decking that will prevent any noise from occurring. In addition to adding a padding material, a metal roof can be installed to be less noisy by using a raised profile, adequate insulation, thicker metal sheets, and the right kind of fastener to ensure the metal sheets don’t move in the wind. If you would prefer a roof that is as silent as possible, consult with a roofing contractor about installation methods.

Check the Vents

Metal is an electrical conductor, but that doesn’t mean that the roof will actually attract lightning. There is no greater risk of your home getting struck by lightning with a metal roof than with an asphalt roof. In fact, in the event of a lightning storm, a metal roof can actually be beneficial. As a conductive material, if the roof is struck by lightning (the risk of this is very low), the effect of the lightning will be spread out throughout the roof, lessening the impact. Metal can also reduce the risk of a fire starting because it is not a combustible material, unlike asphalt shingles.

Replace Missing Shingles

A lot has changed with roofing technology. Old metal roofs could develop rust over time, but with today’s manufacturing processes, there is little to worry about. Today’s metal roofs are manufactured with high-tech coatings making them incredibly resistant to moisture and rust. One exception may be copper roofs, even though it’s not rust that changes the appearance of copper roofs. Over time, copper can develop a patina that naturally occurs as the material is exposed to water and oxygen. This oxidation process gives copper roofs a bluish-green color.

Seal Seams

The Indianapolis region does get hot in the summer, so we understand that you don’t want to add anything to your home to make the heat worse. But rest assured that installing a metal roof won’t affect how hot your home is during the summer months. Metal roofing materials are actually energy efficient because they reflect light and won’t absorb heat from the sun. Asphalt shingles on the other hand are not reflective and do absorb heat, which will affect how warm your attic and home are.
